We asked you to dive deep into your imagination and invent a mysterious sea creature – and you didn’t disappoint! From glowing krakens and ancient owls to daring underwater adventures, your stories were packed with suspense, surprises and creativity.

We received so many fantastic entries from across the UK (and beyond!) – thank you to everyone who took part. It was incredibly hard to choose, but after much reading and re-reading, we’re thrilled to announce our four winning stories.

Congrats to our four winners!

Ewan Kim, age 12, United States

In the 1960s, a submarine dive to Challenger Deep was launched. While descending, flashing lights blinked through the windows. Click, click, click.

Out of nowhere, a black silhouette darted by. It had pectoral fins similar to squid tentacles, a bioluminescent dorsal fin, and a menacing jaw with sharp teeth similar to anglerfish.

“Ahhh, there’s something out there! Quick, dive deeper before that monstrosity attacks us!”

After this spotting, people started to create tall tales about this creature. One tale states that it was a monster used by aliens to kill all humans.

In 2023, an injured animal that resembled the one from the 1960s tale washed ashore on Papua New Guinea. Scientists attempted to rescue it by stitching up its wounds. While doing so, they discovered that this strange creature was actually a new species of dolphin. To learn more about it, they tagged it with a camera and satellite tag before pushing it back into the ocean.

A month later, scientists revisited the beach to discover the dolphin they rescued was waiting for them. It gave them a sea sponge as a gift for saving its life. Scientists learned that this dolphin species is intelligent and friendly, using its monstrous features only as a way to hunt for prey. Now named the firefly dolphin, the discovery of this species teaches us that a creature should never be judged by its features.

Aoife Peel, age 10, London

The abyssal zone. An area of the ocean where humanity rarely ever ventures. The few animals that dwell there are encased in shadow, keeping mainly to themselves. Mia was one of them: a dumbo octopus.

With ear-like fins, and writhing tentacles, she had a thirst for adventure.

One day, when Mia was swimming through an underwater cave, she heard an ominous growl coming from the opposite wall. “Oh no,” Mia whispered quietly. What was making such a frightening noise? She propelled herself forward, the ocean pressure pushing against her body, her many hearts beating with adrenaline.

The growling got louder and louder, and soon a blinding light appeared in the cave. Mia swam closer.

Suddenly, she stopped. She had just remembered what her mum had said “If you ever hear weird growling sounds then see a glowing light, that is an anglerfish.”

“S’up? The name’s Charlie! Don’t worry, I won’t try to eat you,” an anglerfish said out of the darkness. Mia timidly swam closer and introduced herself. Instantly, the two became friends, and played together. “Thanks so much Charlie!” Mia exclaimed.

“My name is Jacob, Super Spy Jacob.”

The anglerfish grinned.

Morgan, age 10, Whitchurch

Sid’s Friends

In a deep, dark, place, in a magical world there lived a mysterious creature named Sid.

All the other creatures were terrified of Sid, but deep down all he wanted was some friends. Sid was terrifying but he did not know it.He wondered why no one talked to him. “Am I not friendly enough?" And then he looked at his reflection in a shiny shell and screamed, “Ahhh!”
“No wonder no one talks to me, I’m absolutely terrifying,” he thought. “I need to tell them not to be scared of me”.
“Tell who?” said a cute fish named Emily. “Tell all  fish who are scared of me.” he sighed.
“How about I tell them for you?” Emily asked.
“Yes, please!” said an excited squid.
“Ok, I’ll invite everyone in the sea to a friend party! Bye.”
“Yes!” Sid thought.
It was the day of the party and Sid was excited. But then something popped into his head. “I hope this is a good idea”.
Suddenly he noticed all the creatures of the sea were swimming towards him.Sid started to flee.
The largest animal shouted, “Where are you going?”
Sid froze. “Want to play Sea-Tig?”
“Yes, please,” cheered Sid, and they all swam off playing.

Elisabeth, age 10, Stockton on Tees

Sam the Octopus-Anglerfish

One day, while the octopus-anglerfish was going on migration with his parents, he suddenly felt really anxious. At first, he didn’t know why. But with butterflies in his tummy, he found himself worrying about being late, being too slow, and—most of all—about making friends, which he had never managed before.

He urged his mum and dad to start swimming faster.

“Making a friend when you’re half octopus and half anglerfish is tricky business,” he sighed.

When they got to the winter nesting ground, they went to find a good spot.

“Mum,” called Sam (the octopus-anglerfish), “can I have the new baby’s room? Because I’m six now, so I’m a big fish! And... can I go find a friend?”

“Erm... can I help you in a minute, darling?”

There was a long pause and then, at last:“OK, I’m ready now, dear.”

“Thanks. I really need a friend.”

“I hope I make a good friend today,” said Sam as the two of them swam through the crowded coral reef and spotted a nice-looking clownfish.

“Mum, I like the look of that clownfish.”

“Ah. Right, we can try, but…” She hesitated. “Some fish don’t like fish who are different. Especially the smaller ones.”

“Right, let’s go!” said Sam, swimming towards the clownfish.

“Quick! Weird fish! Escape!” the clownfish shouted as he darted away.

“Well, you were right, Mum,” said Sam sadly.

“I know, dear. It’s getting late. We can do this tomorrow.”

“OK, Mum,” yawned Sam. “Night.”

In the morning, Sam came to the edge of their bit of deep-sea coral.

“Mum, a sea snake is swimming outside. Can I try her?”

“Of course, dear. I think she’s much more likely to accept you as a good friend.”

“See you later, then!”

“Yes, dear.”

Sam swam out to see the sea snake. He swam right towards her.

“Hi,” he said.

“Um, hi,” replied the sea snake.

“Yeah, so... what’s your name?”

“Chloe. And yours?” asked Chloe.

“Sam. Sam-squid.”

As the two deep-sea-dwelling fish chatted, they became closer and closer friends, at last.

“I’d better get going,” said Chloe. “It’s getting late.”

“Me too,” said Sam.

“Same time, same place tomorrow?”

“All right. Bye!”

“Bye.”

They looked at each other for a moment – and departed.
