Monthly competition: The Risky Moment

Our Risky Moment competition published in Nature Daredevils invited young explorers to capture a risky moment in the wild – a split second when animals must make bold choices to survive. From daring leaps across rocky cliffs to dangerous river crossings, we received many hair-raising entries showing just how adventurous life in nature can be.

Meet our four fearless winners!

Emilia, age 9, Newbold on Stour

Leap for survival

Lewis, age 9, Slackhead

Salmon leaping up a waterfall

Henry, age 7, Barnoldby Le Beck

Wild guinea pigs hunted by vultures

Ailsa, age 10, Bath

Crossing crocodileinfested waters

Highly Commended

Ahmed, age 14, Burton-on-Trent

Water or wolves?

Annabel, age 11, Woodley

Snow leopard leap

Jumping wide gaps between rocks in steep mountain. Terrain could make it slip and lead to fatal problems. Powerful legs and long tail help to control balance in mid-air.

Runners-Up

Ana, age 9, Bath

Ella, age 9, Edinburgh

Pine marten

This is a pine marten leaping away from a fire and over the jaws of hungry crocodiles. It's great jumping skills help it to escape.

Silvia, age 13, Broxbourne

Mountain goat

A mountain goat that can either jump on a small ledge and possibly fall down or get attacked by a mountain lion. The animal would cope with its unique hooves made to keep balance and its dangerous horns for defence.

Jocelyn, age 5, Lee on Solent

Baby sea turtles racing to the ocean

Somewhere beneath a grassy field right now, a tiny insect is building an underground loudspeaker.
